You become a leader when you start leading
As much as we try to define leadership, it has no hard and fast definition. We’re all different, and so is the way we lead.
But one thing is for sure, you don’t become a leader when you’re given a title. You become a leader the moment you start leading.
A year ago, Naresh kumaar was appointed as the Team Leader for our client Hevo Data. Unlike other projects, ETL was new for the team and Naresh. Amongst many firsts, the project required the team to build automation from scratch. The team recognised the challenge and jumped in. Right from studying the domain to researching ways to improve the workflow, the team took on every task with enthusiasm.
A year later, the Hevo Data team has successfully built the automation, grown to 3 sub teams handling Regression, UI Automation, and SaaS Connectors. Moreover, they’ve won multiple appreciations from Hevo Data.
If you get to the bottom of this, all you’ll find is one thing - Leadership. When Naresh was assigned to Hevo Data he was a part of a two member team. Since then, he has enabled 8 people to become leaders and take Hevo Data to new heights.
When you speak to Naresh, you’ll hear just one thing - “It was all because of my team”. He claims that he did what he and his team thought would be the best things to do in the project, and that’s all that brought them so far.
When you speak to Naresh’s team members and colleagues, they don’t take a second to tell you that he’s extremely humble. He’s proactive, and keeps his weaknesses and strengths transparent to everyone he works with. He’s not afraid to make a mistake and own it. And most importantly, he’s always on a learning curve. The ownership to research and come out with plans and ideas for the project with minimal guidance has been his mantra.
Being a leader isn’t about managing people. It isn’t just about taking updates each day. Being a leader is about enabling the ones around you to be leaders. It’s about being vulnerable, being open to error and accepting of your flaws. to begin with. It’s only then that your team too will do the same.
Naresh didn’t wake up one day with the title ”leader”. Naresh kumaar, in his own way, has been a leader throughout. And the Hevo Data project has only shown us the beauty of Naresh’s humble leadership
